Transcript of letter from the ex MD
I was interested to get the info on the "Bounty Club" and will give you a potted history on Bounty Boats Ltd (1967 - 1990 May).
Bounty Boats was started by Mike Brister and in 1968 Peter Brown bought it from him. Peter and I trained as Mechanical Engineers at Loughborough College in the early 1950's.
Bounty in its early years built its own hire boats purely for its own fleet. There was a small fleet, when Peter bought the business, of assorted craft. The only way to go was to standardize - at that time Frank Wilde of FB Wilds at Horning were building the Caribbean/Bermuda class of craft (Bath tubs!) but would not sell any to Peter Brown so in conjunction with Stan Bruckshaw of Solar Marine they designed the Buccaneer which was a big improvement on the Wilds craft.
In 1973 other yards were taking an interest in what Bounty were doing and in early 1974 I joined Bounty to start the Moulding Shop (Broadland Moulders Ltd) and look after the Sales and Marketing of Bounty products.
The business grew rapidly and at one stage we had 85 people working on three sites and on occasions producing 12 craft a month. In these heady times we were producing 24 tons of finished mouldings a month.
At the end of the 70's a purpose built works was built in Brundall comprising a large stores - Wet Shed to lift 10T in and out of the water - Boat build area to build up to 6 craft at any one time and an Engineers Shop to carry out the manufacture of prop shafts, stern tubs, stainless steel tanks - handrails - bow rollers - hydraulic oil tanks and complete systems together with many other parts used in boat building.
For many years we had a Rep who covered a very wide area selling the parts we made and made to customers order. We did nearly all of our own design work.
All the craft we built were for hire fleets in the UK, Eire, N Ireland, France and Holland. Only 11 craft were built for private use. As we had a very successful hire fleet we knew what let best and hence the internal design to our standard.
Large numbers of mouldings were sold to yards for their own use. Only genuine Bounty built boats had a black plastic plate with our name, Boat type and Build Number on it.
Sorry I have no further records. The company which had a highly successful trustworthy record was sold in May 1st 1990 and it had a very chequered history after that finally disappearing in 1996 - sad when so many worked so hard to build reliable 1st class products. But that's history.
Hope this letter helps you a little
Yours sincerely
MD Bounty Boats Ltd Brundall
